Axcess Communications 1993
1993 – The internet has just started. and Axcess communcations begins. We set out selling websites and email to companies. At this time, there were only about 10 websites in all of Canada. All of them were universites that were leading the way by experimentation.
There were no corporate websites in the US or Canada, so we started dialing companies and offering our web services. Usally to the effect: “Hi, would you like to have a website and email?”. The most common reply was, what’s a website? and e what?
It was difficult, back then we had to use the yellow pages and paperback business directories to find out who to contact at which company. This took a long time.
Once we had rounded up 200 – 300 corporate contacts we began calling and mailing, information on our web services, domains and email.
We contact about 200 companies, and got a few replies for demos. Five companies decided to take a look at what we were talking about. Those enterprising companies were:
The Hamilton Spectator newspaper
Royal Bank of Canada
We did our presenations on a macintosh powerbook 140 with a 14.4 dial up connection running Netscape Navigator version 1.
The internet wasn’t nearly as spectacular then as it is today, but it still had global capabilites that were available 24/7 and this is what we tried to explain was ground breaking technology. But no one was interested.
Our last phone was with a Canadian phone company called Bell Canada; We were thankful just to get a reply in early 1995 and it was to the effect…
“We will never get a website or have anything to do wth the internet. We want all the information to flow through the phone. If you want sports scores, you dial 1-800-xxx-xxxx and press 5 for the NHL, 6 for the NBA etc 8 for the NBL, then press a number for the division and then eventually a team. anyway, there’s no chance we will ever compete against our own phone business, it just doesn’t make any sense. so no website or internet ever for us. best of luck.
In early 1995 we had spent a year and a half selling websites without a single sale. So we closed shop and that was a wrap.
Once we resumed as a new company, insite interactive in 1998, The junior mining company Goldcorp tracked us down and said; “do you remember that web thing you were talking about a few years ago? yep. well we need a website, do you want to submit a bid?
of course, and we were back.
